Shishapangma is the 14th highest mountain in the world and is the only 8,000m peak to lie entirely in Tibet. The mountain has two summits, with the most commonly climbed being the Central Summit (8,012m).
Regarded as a "holy" mountain by the local Tibetan population, and lying on the route to Mt. Kailash, Shishapangma continues to baffle historians who cannot fathom the origins of her names - Shishapangma, Xizabangma and Gosainthan. Surveyors seem unable to fix her height, which is listed anywhere from 8,012m to 8,046m. The mountain is perhaps the most accessible 8000m summit, rising only a few miles west of the Kathmandu-Lhasa Highway.
The original Northwest Ridge route is an excellent route to summit this mountain, and is objectively quite safe. Since this mountain lies in the 'Himalayan Shadow', good camp sites are provided, as well as excellent summitting opportunities.
