Rara Lake is the largest Lake of Nepal, situated in the Mugu district in the far western region of Nepal. The length of the Lake is 5 km and it is 2 km wide, the altitude is around 3,060m and the maximum depth is 167m. The trek to the western Nepal offers a superb experience of Nature. The trek begins from Kathmandu via Nepalgung, the track passes through countryside which provides beautiful glimpses of a culture and scenery. The high altitude lake is surrounded by alpine meadows and forest of pine, spruce and juniper. The whole route is much travelled region which involves the crossing of GhurchiLagna pass on the way to Rara Lake.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Representative from our office will be at the airport to welcome you and transfer you to your respective Hotels. At the hotel you will be briefed about your daily activities.
Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the historical and cultural heart and has been popular destination for visitors. There will be a full day guided tour to world heritage sites in Kathmandu valley and surrounded areas. The biggest Hindu shrine of Pashupatinath Temple, BoudhanathStupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, the 15th century palace of 55 windows and Swayambhunath (Monkey temple).
Day 3: Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Nepalgunj, which lies close to the Indian border in the Western Terai.
Day 4: Fly Nepalgung to Jumla& trek to ChalaChaur
Today we take a thirty-minute scenic flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla. After we reach Jumla, we will have our lunch and then we will begin our trekking. We then move towards the north side out of the Jumla Valley. After trekking for about an hour, we will reach a small village of Micha bearing a small walled enclosure and a number of Buddhist stupas. Thesestupas were made at around late 15th century in the memory of important dignitaries of the region. The trail now leads us to rock-strewn path and at last at ChalaChaur.
Day 5: Cross a Pass
After leaving ChalaChaur, we follow a trail moving along path of steep stones. While moving upwards, we cross through birch, pine forest and grassy path. From this place we can see Kanjiroba in the east with its twin peaks towering over the adjacent area. We now move downwards as the trail opens into lush forests. After trekking for few hours, we stop at a suitable campsite in the meadows nearby shepherd’s huts.
Day 6: Trek via Sinja to Botan
Today we walk along the JaljalaKhola through pine forests of and terraced farmland. En route the trail passes the 300 year oldKanaksundari Temple. The temple holds immense religious significance for Hindus. The route further bends along the main river. Crossing a thick plank bridge, we finally descend to reach Sinja village. Sinja village rests upon a small alluvial plain on the west bank of the clear Lah Gad River, also called the SinjaKhola. Sinja was once the ancient capital of the Malla kings. There are stones lying along the trail that foretell the history of Malla dynasty. After lunch, we head to Botan. On the way, we pass through a spectacular gorge and finally reach the village of Botan.
Day 7: Trek to Rara Park Border
After we take leave from SinjaKhola, we move forward with the trail along GhattaKhola amid the amazing beauty of nature. The smooth twist and turns route winds up into the terraced farmland and beautiful valley. Soon we reach within the territory of Rara Lake National Park. Here, we can spend an hour exploring the natural beauty of the park or simply doing whatever we feel like to do. Overnight stay at Gorosingha.
Day 8: Trek to Rara Lake
Leaving Gorosingha, we now move upwards to the Ghurchi Mara ridge for one and half hour. After we reach the crest of the ridge, we will be able to experience an excellent panoramic view to the north, with all the charm and beauty. As we move downwards, Rara Lake becomes visible on the northeast. Before crossing KhatyarKhola, we pass through bamboo and birch forest. We then follow the river upstream to Rara Lake, where we savor the most beautiful trekking experience amid the beauty of nature.
Day 9 & 10: Rest Days at Rara
Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal and we have 2 days set to explore the area and the old village of Rara. We can also visit the National Park Headquarters. This region offers remoteness and a wilderness experience like birds, flowers and wildlife thrive. In Rara, Swimming is allowed and it’s really refreshing.
Day 11: Trek to Jhyari to River Camp
Leaving Rara Lake, we will now continue edging along the target destination. After crossing a ridge, we will reach the village of Jhyari. Walking in the idle manner, the trail further follows terraced farmlands. As we move closer DhauligarKhola valley, we will find a suitable camp nearby the river bank. Here, we will also get to confirm a fantastical charisma of Nature and awesome panorama of mountain peaks.
Day 12: Across GhurchiLagna Pass to Chautha
As we leave DhauligarKhola, we pass through farmland and then we reach to the village of Pina. We will have a small tea break there and then we continue climbing to the GhurchiLagna Pass and come across several alpine-like pastures, walnut groves, small chortens and a narrow valley. Moving ahead in the steep slope will take us into the village of Chautha.
Day 13: Trek to Tharamara
From Chautha, we will now move onto the northern bank of SinjaKhola past the health clinic and the hotel at Kabra. “Silija” the important medicinal mineral which is believed to cure almost anything is found on this area. The route then passes through the villages of Bumra, before climbing to the range at Tharamara.
Day 14: Trek to Jumla
Leaving Tharamara, we follow the trail gently sloping upwards towards Jumla. On the way to Khali Lagna and DanpheLekh, we meet tall birch trees. We can also have the most spectacular views of the mountain ridges to the south. We move down steeply to the first night’s campsite. We will follow the same route back to Jumla. After we reach to Jumla, we can spend our afternoon exploring the market town or simply doing whatever we feel like.
Day 15: Fly to Kathmandu
We take an early morning flight from Jumla to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu. Transfer to Hotel. You can spend the rest of the day doing whatever you feel like.
Day 16: Depart Kathmandu
Our representative will see you off at the airport for final departure to your hometown.
